In Germany in 2006 affected more than 36,000 men and more than 32,000 women from colorectal cancer, the estimates of the cancer registry. Technical terminology is referred to these tumors as colon cancer, if upper portions of the colon are affected, and as rectal tumors if they are found in the last section of the intestine to the sphincter. Cancers of the small intestine are very rare and not to be confused with the far more common colon cancer.



The following information is for people who want to learn about the currently known risk factors and early detection of colorectal cancer, and provide patients with colorectal cancer, their families and interested parties an overview of diagnosis, treatment and care of this disease. A doctor's advice can be supplemented by information from the Internet but not replace.

A major source for the development of information was the "S3-guideline Colorectal Cancer". It was developed in 2004 and 2008 conferences, and offers professionals a framework guidelines for the prevention, early detection and treatment of colon cancer. Published by the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS), the German Cancer Society (DKG) and other medical-scientific societies and patient organizations. The guideline is available online at www.dgvs.de / media / Leitlinie.pdf freely accessible, but is aimed primarily at professionals.
An important source for further information about cancer as the Deutsche ILCO eV, the Association for stoma patients and people with cancer, www.ilco.de.
